Reinventing Your Career as a Woman in the Netherlands in your Mid-30s
By Angana Mitra
Your 30th birthday is often a quiet checkpoint. You’ve evolved, grown, and sometimes outgrown your old career path. For some women, especially those living abroad, restarting isn’t just about passion—it’s about adapting. Take the case of a linguistic and TESOL-trained teacher who spent over a decade teaching English to learners in India, Ukrainian refugees, IELTS and TOEFL learners across the globe and students in Maastricht. When she moved to the Netherlands, she discovered that teaching in public schools required fluent Dutch—a skill she was still acquiring. So, while figuring out her next move, she leaned into something that had always come naturally: writing.
What started as a bridge—ghostwriting, blogging, creating content—soon became a new career path. Because for someone trained to understand the nuances of language, writing didn’t feel like a shift. It felt like a continuation. A reinvention that allowed her to keep teaching—just through storytelling.
Well, this is ‘ME’.
In the Netherlands, where flexible work and lifelong learning are quietly championed, such pivots aren’t just possible—they’re powerful. Let’s discuss this further.
The Dutch Advantage: Why This Is a Great Place to Start Over
The Netherlands may be small, but it’s big on second chances. When I moved to the Netherlands, I worked at Action for a short period just to find my footing. And you know what stood out? No one judged me. Not for taking a basic job. Not for starting over. That small but powerful moment told me:
This country makes space for reinvention. From my shift from teaching to content writing, I’ve seen how this country quietly supports reinvention.
1. Flexibility is Respected
Part-time roles aren’t judged here—they’re normal. I could freelance, study Dutch, and care for my family without anyone raising an eyebrow.
Try this: Start small. The culture supports gradual growth.
2. Feedback is Direct and Helpful
Dutch communication is no-nonsense—but it saves time. I could openly talk about career gaps without overjustifying.
Try this: Be honest. It’s valued more than polish.
3. Resources Are Everywhere
From local language classes to tech reskilling platforms like Techionista or Restart Network, support is accessible and affordable.
Try this: Check your gemeente or local library. Hidden gems, truly.
4. Balance is Built-In
Here, life doesn’t orbit around work. I could learn, write, and still take that 5 p.m. walk with my dog.
Try this: Create a routine around energy, not exhaustion.
Navigating the Realities: What Still Needs Work
Every system has its imperfections, and the Netherlands is no exception. Even with all the positives of being Dutch, traditional gender roles still exist. Women continue to perform a disproportionate amount of unpaid caregiving labor, and Dutch business culture remains patriarchal. Losing years of work experience can be aesthetically concerning in some more traditional industries.
But what is more relevant is that these conversations are active—and changing. Organizations focus more than ever on inclusivity. Initiatives such as female leadership programs, mentorships, and diversity goals are growing. Many employers actively support parents and returners—not just in words, but in policies.
How to Make the Most of It
If you’re in the Netherlands and thinking of reinventing your career at 35 (or beyond), here’s what genuinely helped me—and might help you too:
✳️ Use What’s Free
I joined a taalcafé through my gemeente—a casual, welcoming way to improve my Dutch and meet others. Check for retraining subsidies and support programs; they’re often quietly available.
✳️ Start Small, Start Local
Volunteering in Dutch schools kept me connected to my teaching roots and built local experience—without the pressure.
✳️ Ask for Guidance
The Empowerment Foundation gave me clarity and confidence when I started having doubts in myself about whether I am good to fit in this country.. Don’t just chase jobs—seek mentorship that sees your whole story.
✳️ Own Your Journey
From working at Action to ghostwriting and blogging, I stopped hiding the twists in my path—and that honesty opened doors. In the Netherlands, authenticity matters more than a flawless resume.
Mid-Career Reinvention
What’s striking is that starting at 30 or infact at any age in the Netherlands is not only achievable but enjoyable. You’re not job hunting—you're looking for work that helps you achieve your definition of success at your own pace. Dutch culture is complicated; however, most importantly, it provides opportunities to grow without facing burnout. So, whether you are looking to change careers, pick up a side business, or start doing something you’ve always wanted to do, keep this in mind:
You’re not starting from scratch. You’re starting from relative strength.
